The best ways to get the most from Twitter

The Best Ways To Get The Most From Twitter

Twitter is the best thing since sliced bread or what a waste of time!

There have been lots of negative comments in the press recently about Twitter and that’s a shame. What they don’t realise is Twitter is a not always a natural, instant thing; to get Twitter you need to hang around a little longer, pick up new followers and find people to follow. There are no set rules for how to use Twitter. If you want to Tweet about your every day tasks, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s fine. But if you really want to get the full benefit, then below are the things that work for me:

Tweet, often and honestly.

That doesn’t necessary mean you tell the truth it just means tweet things from the heart, things that you care about, things that amuse or entertain you or, if you must, things that will get a re-action.

Follow people you like.

Find people you like and follow them. It doesn’t have to be famous people, just ones that say things you can connect with. They might follow you back!

Don’t Tweet because you want to get more followers!

There are millions of Twitterers, they will follow you because they like what you say in 140 characters, not because you’re trying to sell yourself or other stuff.

Show people cool stuff.

Stupid photos, interesting links, things that make you smile or angry, music tracks and other peoples blogs!

Re-tweet.

Seen a Tweet you like? Make sure others know about it. That’s what makes the Twittersphere go round.

Respond to tweets.

You don’t have to re-tweet everything, but letting people know you’re there and like what they say is always good, so hit reply. Don’t worry if they don’t answer back – it’s not about how they interact with you, but how you interact with them.

Block and move on.

Don’t get sucked into a flame war. While it’s good to have people with different opinions on your follow list, there’s no need to put up with those that you find offensive or annoying. That’s what blocks for.

Use hashtags (when necessary)

Hashtags are excellent for grouping comments together. Why is this important? It makes it easier to find items on similar themes; it also helps identify what are the most important issues on twitter (Trending topics).

And finally and most importantly:

Its not just about your blog.

When people follow me, I like to follow them back if, and only if, I like what they are tweeting. The number of times I’ve been to individual twitter pages to just find no other interaction, no re-tweets, no hashtags just a Tweets of “Hey, new post today!” Why would I want to read that?

I do, because of Twitter, read other people’s blogs when they post. Why? Because they interact, they communicate, they re-tweet, they hashtag; basically they get out there and are part of the community and I find what they have to say interesting.

In conclusion, Twitter is all about interaction. I only started to blog because of Twitter, I found I had more to say and 140 characters is not enough sometimes. I hope people read it, hey that’s surely the point of blogging, but that’s not why I Tweet. Yes it’s handy for letting people know I’ve blogged a new post (and it’s worth retweeting several times, such is the transitory nature of Twitter) but if that’s all it becomes about, then maybe Twitter isn’t for you, ask stephen Fry?

Some Tips for Effective Marketing with Twitter

Some Tips for Effective Marketing with Twitter

The Craze of this centuary must be social networking sites, With millions of people connecting through social media, advertisers and marketers are hustling to get in on the action. In the past year we’ve seen many companies and brands attempt to step into this new world only to fail miserably.

After analyzing many marketing flops on Twitter, the underlying issues are very apparent.

To be an effective marketer on Twitter you must first stop thinking like one.

Marketing on Twitter requires a bit of a shift in your mindset. Twitter is all about simple conversations; you can’t use press releases, marketing copy and other one-way communication tactics and expect results. Customers want interaction—with you and with each other. Tweeting is one-to-one, with the benefit of being in a public space where other customers may overhear your conversation and interact with each other on your behalf.

You need to Know the rules.

Get to know your neighbors It’s important to remind yourself of the fact that Twitter is a real life community and that every community has it’s own set of rules. Before you jump into the conversation, spend some time watching and learning. You’ll find that most people are very friendly and supportive, but it’s best to understand the ground rules first.

The easiest way to jump in is to ask for help. This may seem strange at first because brands are used to being on the other end of the spectrum, typically telling consumers what to do. Asking for advice might have you feel as if you are making your brand vulnerable, but the fact that we as a community are helping each other out, is what makes social media great.

You need to Connect person to person.

People don’t talk to brands, they talk to people It doesn’t matter how large your company is. On Twitter, people want to connect to a person. They are not interested in talking to your ‘brand’. Make your updates personable and human, not scrubbed and polished like news columns. It’s fine to be a little rough around the edges.

If you can, identify a real person to write the updates to give a face to your Tweets. For example, Comcast’s Twitter account (@comcastcares) is headed by Frank Eliason, Director of Digital Care. Frank even lists his direct email and personal website on his profile which not only gives a human face to the company, it helps build trust in the conversation.

By using Twitter, Comcast is offering an alternative, less corporate confined outlet for customers to receive support. Customers are able to ask questions and be communicated with on their own turf; no more having to wait in long lines, no need to press 4 for more options!

You need to Create a conversation.

Twitter is a two-way street Some companies might eye Twitter as another ‘channel’ to conquer. This kind of thinking is dangerous with interactive marketing. Social Media is not about building a channel; it’s about creating a conversation. Your job should be to get people talking by posing questions, asking for input and connecting people as a trusted third party.

Creating a conversation requires something that many marketers are not used to: actively listening to customers. This back and forth motion is what makes social media wonderful and helps build an emotional connection between your brand and consumers. Since consumers now have more choices and are able to jump from brand to brand in an instant, this relationship has become more crucial than ever.

You need to Promote a dedicated ambassador

Make Social Media a part of your plan. Social Media outlets like Twitter work best when they are frequently updated. You’ll find that the most prolific companies on Twitter have tens of thousands of updates. This may seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be; these updates tend to be short, quick and off-the-cuff.

We find that it works best when our clients designate a single person internally to act as a social media liaison. Doing so will ensure that the updates occur more frequently and result in less clutter. This social media ambassador can then begin to build relationships with key customers and these customers are then able to act as brand ambassadors for you.

When designating ambassadors for your company, be sure to establish some “rules of engagement”. This will serve as a guideline on dealing with and deciding on conversations they should participate in and which ones should get escalated within your organization.

You need to Have something to offer.

Give people a reason to follow you. People love to pass on information and if people are following your brand on Twitter, they are already showing a proclivity to your message. So why not reward them? Offer inside information, special offers or just one-to-one conversation with customers who follow you through Social Media.

Once you have been using Twitter for a while, you’ll notice key people that like to talk about your company (aka “Influencers”). These people are worth more than you can imagine! Encourage users by converting them into brand ambassadors: Invite them to your private product launches, let them contribute to new feature requests, ask them how you can improve. Not only will you gain firsthand, unfiltered information on how your products are used in the real world, you’ll also activate a network of ambassadors to give you the best thing you could ask for: positive word-of-mouth.

Twitter and your website.

Integrate your messaging. Twitter is a very flexible technology, which is what makes it so powerful. The fact that Twitter can be set up to automatically update your followers every time you post a blog entry or that any RSS feed can be re-broadcasted through your Twitter postings, are great examples of Twitter’s strengths. However, be careful not to abuse this, as too many automatically generated posts will make you lose that all-important human factor.

Another great option is the ability to add buttons, badges and widgets to sections of your other sites (articles, pages, etc.) so that visitors are able to “Tweet” it’s contents. Each article or page can be linked with a button that allows customers to send an update to their followers with a quick blurb and a link to your page. Again, people generally only Tweet interesting or compelling content and a list of products or features may not be very intriguing to them.

Keep Tracking Conversations.

Listen and Learn. By using the @reply feature, it’s easy to discover people talking about your brand. The Twitter search function also allows you to search by your company or product name. Use these tools to discover the things being said about you in real-time. Stay on top of what’s being said about you by frequently checking your @replies; you might be surprised by what you find.

More advanced tools also exist that allow you to graph conversation activity over time, as well as monitor positive and negative sentiment amongst users. Using these tools help to provide you with a more in-depth understanding about what people are saying; which in turn will help you develop more relevant conversations

The Power of Twitter

The Power of Twitter

Whether reading an article or having a conversation with people (face-to-face) and reading/hearing the phrase “It’s just twitter,” irritates me–especially when it’s drenched in a condescending tone. I find that people who have muttered this phrase don’t understand the power of twitter and what it can really do for your brand, business and/or service or product. Having a networking tool available at your fingertips that can reach the far ends of the globe and back within seconds is a phenomenal thing. But just how can twitter be effectively used and what exactly is the power of twitter?

Twitter alone can’t do anything for you so don’t just sign up and expect miracles to happen, there has to be a purpose behind the tweets; this isn’t the Wizard of Oz, folks. I recently had a conversation with a top executive who wasn’t familiar with twitter and he immediately stated how Ashton Kutcher was the best twitterer in the land because he had millions of followers and that’s how the game was played. I disagreed and immediately named six people who had far less followers who were using twitter in ways that were truly engaging and changing the world in a positive way. Now, I have nothing against @aplusk but what he does with his twitter account is give the average Joe a glimpse into the life of a mega star. In researching for this article, I popped over to Ashton’s page (I don’t follow him) and saw that he’s in Russia–from his tweets, twitpics and constant hashtags on rumplestinkel I didn’t see him tweet back to any of his followers. But if you pop over to, let’s say, power@tv, you’ll find a different twitter atmosphere, a place where it’s not all about himself, but about his followers as noted by every other tweet he’s engaging with them and at over 6,400 followers–he’s doing a great job. What is he doing with his twitter page? he’s motivating people, inspiring them to get to the next level and when one of his followers gets a tweet back from him the brand name strengthens because he isn’t just talking the talk–he’s skipping, hopping and running the walk–right along with the loyal followers.

For me, as a dating/relationship blogger, I want people to come to my blog, read it and hopefully leave a comment. If all I did daily was send out tweets on new blog posts–eventually people would unfollow me and boycott my blog. But instead, I use twitter to ruffle a few feathers in the dating world and help people in their dating quests. I tweet out surveys, other people’s blogs, and various dating articles while also interjecting a few personal tweets on my own dating mishaps–which really stirs up the pot. I get replies from people in South Africa, Australia, and Brazil (to name a few) who all want to know.

That, my friend, is the power of Twitter–to engage, empower and inspire. Not everyone will follow this path, but you can certainly see where “It’s just Twitter” doesn’t cut it for me. Now I ask you–what will you be doing with the power of Twitter?

How to turn your twitter page into an SEO Masterpiece

How to Turn Your Twitter Profile Page into an SEO Masterpiece

What is a SEO Masterpiece? "Search Engine Optmisation - SEO"

If you have spent any time around social marketing you probably know that SEO and social media go hand and hand. So, how do you turn your Twitter account into a search-able masterpiece? Why is this important? Girls and Boys, hold on to your hats, press on and don’t worry, I will keep this in 6 year old terms (because that is how I think).

Let’s start off as if you are starting with a fresh profile. What is the first thing that you do when starting a twitter account? That is right, pick a name…a good name.

Picking a user name and actual name: Your twitter user name should include the keyword that you wish to rank high in. For example, if you want people to find your Twitter profile when they search for Bananas, make sure that ‘Bananas’ is in your name. @XYZBananas would be an appropriate example. It is usually a good idea not to use any dashes, make it short and easy to remember.

Next, with your actual name you can use your actual name, or take a step further and include the keyword again if it is appropriate (this doesn’t help with personalizing your account to you though). If you already have an account, you can fix this by logging into your Twitter account and clicking “Settings”. From there, change your ‘Name’. Do not change your ‘Username’.

What to do with your website URL…

Make sure not to use a link that has been shortened by using a shortner like bit.ly. Do however, get rid of the “www” because Twitter will only show the first 20 characters, it will help in allowing people to see the link before they click on it. If you need to change this, go into your Twitter account and click “settings”. From there go to the “Account” page and scroll halfway down the page.

Next is your bio…

This should be easy to include your keywords again. Make sure that your personality can shine through, but be short simple and to the point. You only have 160 characters and don’t waste them on words that have no search value. Consider this a to-the-point snapshot of who you are and how you want to be perceived and also is what a lot of people use to determine if they are going to follow you or not (but, only if they are interested in a real give and take twitter relationship). Keep in mind that Google will sometimes include your location in this. Make sure that you give a good location. You can fix this by logging into your Twitter account and clicking “Settings”. From there, change your “One Line Bio”.

You can even SEO your Twitter pic (avatar)…

Yes, you can even SEO your profile picture! You can’t add tags but, you can rename the photo before you upload it that way when it shows up in the URL it will have the keywords that you named. Be careful not to add spaces. Doing that will not translate the link very well. I don’t recommend changing your profile picture but, I would recommend changing the name of the profile picture and re-uploading it. You can do this by clicking on “Settings” and then “Picture”.

Burn Baby Burn…

Burn Your Twitter feed: Why would you want to use an RSS feed for Twitter? Well, by using RSS, people can subscribe to your posts (and in this case Tweets) and get instant feeds sent to them. Just like a blogger would use RSS feeds to increase their popularity with search engines and help draw traffic to their blogs, you can use RSS feeds to do the same for your Twitter account. So, how do you go about doing this you say? I will show you how to set this up in Google FeedBurner.

First you go to FeedBurner. If you have a gmail account you can sign in with this. Otherwise, sign up for a new account.

Next, in a different window open up your Twitter account and scroll down to the middle of your Twitter page and click on the RSS feed icon. Next go to the top of the page and copy the URL. (It should look similar to this: http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline/104933666)

Next, paste it into FeedBurner. Then make sure that you add your user name and password so that it won’t be locked when people try and look at the feeds (Use the same format as the highlighted text: http://username: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it /statuses/user_timeline/15473972.rss). Click next and you have just RSS’d your twitter profile!

Last, go through the dashboard and choose important options for your chosen use of your feed. You can share widgets, add pictures, set up a title for the feed and make sure that it pings (connects) with search engines.

Tweet This…

Make sure that your tweets contains keywords and phrases that you want search engines to pick up. Also, make sure to occasionally use #hashtags. Search engines are already ranking these and this will also help tweeps find you in Twitter search.

You’re My Favorite…

Twitter Favorites with Keywords: Make sure that some of your favorite tweets contain keywords, key phrases and relevant links.

Tiny?

Tinyurl.com your links. By Using a shortener like Tinyurl, search engines will recognize the link and rank them.

Build it and They will Come…Just like in the film "Field of Dreams"

By actively following other and having others follow you, you increase awareness with search engines.

The Missing Link…

This is probably the most important part of your Twitter SEO. Make sure that you are submitting your Twitter profile and RSS feeds to directories. Also, be sure to add your twitter user name in blog posts and forums. This will allow you to get noticed by more people, more often, resulting in a larger and diverse following and higher page ranks.

Congratulations – You now have one of the most searchable profiles on Twitter!

Update on Twitter by Bizstone@Biz

Update on Twitter by Bizstone@Biz

In the early days of Twitter, I used to send out short updates just to keep everyone in the loop since so much was happening. It's been a while, but you signed up for short, monthly updates from Twitter so we thought it was time to start sharing more information. We've had quite a year. If you haven't visited in a while, we'd like to invite you to come have a look at http://twitter.com -- we've been busy!

Growing Up
In the course of a year, registered Twitter accounts have grown more than 1,500% and our team has grown 500%. Recently, we hired our 140th employee! His name is Aaron and he's an engineer focused on building internal tools to help promote productivity, communication, and support within our company. We celebrated with a little dance party.

Features of Note
Some features of note that we released over the course of a year include the ability to create lists, quickly spread information with a retweet button, and an easier way to activate your mobile phone to work with Twitter over SMS. We also built a new mobile web site that looks and works much better on smart phones.

Feeling Inspired
By working together during critical times when others needed help, sharing important information that otherwise might not make the news, and inventing new and interesting ways to use Twitter, you've shown us that Twitter is more than a triumph of technology -- it is a triumph of humanity. Projects like Fledgling and Hope140 were inspired by you.

Chirp!
While there may only be 140 full-time employees working at the Twitter offices, there are thousands of dedicated platform developers who have now created more than 70,000 registered Twitter applications creating variety and utility for all of us. We'll be gathering this spring at Chirp, our first ever official Twitter developer conference.

Thanks,
Biz Stone, Co-founder (@Biz)
